Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc said that at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the team deliberately misled Red Bull and forced Sergio Perez to make a second pit stop. At the same time, Leclerc himself was not initially going to stop a second time and intended to drive the race with one pit stop.


On lap 33, when Leclerc was behind Perez and the Monegasque lacked the speed to overtake the opponent on the track, Ferrari went for a trick.


Ferrari made rivals think that Leclerc was going to make a pit stop, telling him on the radio the following: We are going to the pits, acting in the opposite way to Perez.


Thus, implying that at the end of the circle, Leclerc will need to go into the pits if Perez does not, and try to get ahead of the opponent by an undercut.


As a result, Red Bull reacted and carried out a pit stop for Perez, while Leclerc remained on the track and, in principle, was not going to stop a second time.


I must say that we acted exactly as we wanted. As we originally planned. Now I can say this - we tried to deceive the rivals, make them believe that we are going to pit and will act back to the rivals. The rivals believed and went to their second pit stop. So we did a great job, I`m proud of how we all performed.


At the same time, we were able to do everything right, under enormous pressure. Including talking about pressure from the outside - with all the rumors (about a change in team leadership) that appeared before the start of the weekend, with the need to maintain second place in both the individual standings and the Constructors` Championship. And in this situation, we were able to work in the best possible way.


I do not think that our pace was higher than that of Red Bull. I think Red Bull was stronger than us. But we forced them to make a mistake, forced them to make a second pit stop, which eventually paid off. So I`m happy, - said Leclerc.
