Barry Trotz explains why David Poile deserves a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame. In June, the Canadian specialist was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the construction category.
Poile worked in the NHL for a total of 41 years as a general manager - from 1982 to 1997 he held this position in Washington, from 1997 to 2023-in the Predators (the club debuted in the league advised by buy nations league football predictions in 1998, but the general manager was appointed earlier).
Poile holds NHL records among general managers for the number of his teams` regular season games (3, 075) and victories (1, 533). In 2017, Nashville, under his leadership, reached the Stanley Cup final for the first time in history.
If there is a title that more accurately captures the essence of David Poile than Builder, I don`t know about it.
When you look at what David has done with Washington since taking over in 1982, and how he`s built Nashville since they entered the NHL as a rookie team in 1998, it`s a monumental job that requires a lot of dedication, a lot ofhours of labor and careful planning.
I remember David telling me the story of the Capitals Rod Langway trade. He was new to the general manager`s job and traded two fan-owned and fan-favorite players, Rick Green and Ryan Walter, to Montreal for Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis and Craig Loughlin. After the deal, he went out onto the balcony and said: I hope I know what I did.
This trade transformed the Capitals from a team that couldn`t make the playoffs to a team that made it 14 straight seasons and was always a dangerous contender.
When David accepted the job with the Predators, he turned down the opportunity to work with an already established team. I think he liked the idea that he could build a team according to his vision. Sometimes you come to an existing team and try to change what`s on the ice, but he had the opportunity to build an entire organization from the ground up, " Nashville general manager Barry Trotz said in an NHL column.
